Under the leadership of former Senator  Bob Graham, the Florida Conservation Coalition (FCC) was formed several years ago to protect and conserve Florida’s land, fish and wildlife and water resources.  After the Florida Legislature failed to provide significant funding for conservation lands for four years, the FCC developed an amendment to Florida’s constitution to provide consistent funding for conservation land purchases and management.   A portion of the documentary stamp fees is designated as the revenue source.  Amendment 1, the Water and Land Conservation Amendment, will be on the November 4, 2014 ballot during the general election.  A wealth of information is available at http://www.voteyeson1fl.org

Bob Graham has agreed to present his views at a public information session at +Florida Institute of Technology  in Melbourne.  Attorney Clay Henderson has also agreed to present.  This session will be conducted at the Gleason Auditorium at 6:30 PM on Thursday, August 28, 2014.

Preserve Brevard, a non-profit focused on conservation lands in Brevard, has agreed to serve as the organizer.

From a Brevard County perspective, this amendment could provide funds to purchase and manage conservation lands to protect the Indian River Lagoon.  At the Lagoon Action Assembly, the need for settlement ponds to reduce the nutrient flow into the Lagoon was discussed – great ideas that require funding.
