7:30 Recap of recent events

  • Ocean Reef Beach Festival
    • 8,000 visitors, 34 new members
  • Joint Cocoa Beach / Sebastian Inlet Chapter Holiday Party
  • Aquarina beach cleanup netted > 200 lbs of trash, 9 new members
  • Florida Coast & Ocean Day, Tallahassee
    • Surfrider members visited their respective state representatives
    • Several important bills are working their way through committee
    • Update posted on our website

7:45 Committee Reports

  • School Clubs
    • Ocean Breeze Elementary Club expanding
    • Indiatlantic Elementary currently at 30 members
    • May 19 end of year party for all school clubs.
  • Dune Restoration Update
  • Storms have negatively affected past efforts
  • Sea Oat planting planned for South beach at Sebastian inlet on 3 Feb
    • We are partnering with Sea Turtle Conservancy
    • Planting 20 trays @96 plants / tray
    • Kid friendly event that normally generates media interest
  • Ocean Friendly Restaurants
    • Opportunity for local restaurants to improve environmentally responsible practices
    • Members suggested holding events at restaurants who join
    • Initial focus on beach / surf oriented restaurants

  • Florida Pro Surf Contest at Sebastian Inlet 18 Jan
  • Satellite Beach Sustainability Event
  • Locals Only Surf Contest on February 9 – 11th

8:30 New Business

  • We will begin hosting a chapter Social Night on the 4th Thursday of every month
  • Terry Steimer gave presentation recommending removal of Sargassum from local beaches. Suggested a beach cleanup to remove trash and plastic debris, but we feel removal of wrack will have too great a negative environmental impact.  Wrack line stabilizes beach sand, provides food source for migrating birds, and is an important food source for marine/beach organisms.
  • Alec Buchness announced an upcoming “One More Wave” event to benefit veterans in March
  • Citizen Science Day – “A Day in the Live of the Indian River Lagoon” occurring this October. There will be an info meeting at Cocoa Beach HS 2/28/18
  • High School Surf Team Support. Members discussed establishing a set level of support for local teams who solicit our support
